Guest Country 2023

AUSTRALIA

The Embassy of Australia, as the Guest Country of Roma Arte in Nuvola (November 24-26, 2023), showcased a dynamic collection of Australian Aboriginal art, both traditional and contemporary, in an engaging exhibition entitled Threads and Lands.

The exhibition presented a selection of artworks created by Australian Indigenous artists, representing a wide range of techniques and media including painting, sculpture, woodworking, and tapestry. The works embody a universal creative language that captivated the tens of thousands of visitors at Roma Arte in Nuvola, the city’s largest international art fair.

The curatorial narrative of the exhibition was inspired by the physical materiality of the artworks and the creative processes behind them. Distinctive ‘threads’—whether painted lines, lengths of wood, or meters of yarn—are layered, composed, and interwoven to create an intuitive whole. This theme also delves into the conceptual threads present in each work: dreamlike stories, connections to the land, and personal narratives that illustrate various expressions of culture, identity, and the Indigenous Australian community.

The Embassy of Australia is honored to have been designated as the Guest Country of Roma Arte in Nuvola 2023. Our exhibition Threads and Lands reflects our enduring commitment to celebrating the breadth and diversity of Australian Indigenous artistic practice across generations. It has been a great pleasure for us to share this work with a global audience at such a prestigious international art fair,” stated Chargé d’Affaires Mary Ellen Miller.

2023 marks the first appearance of Australia as the Guest Country at Roma Arte in Nuvola.
